Benefits of Traffic School in California

If you’ve recently received a traffic ticket in California, chances are that you have considered attending traffic school. It is also likely that someone you know has recommended it to you. But why? What is the big deal about taking traffic school in California and why is it so important?
Most of us are unaware of the great benefits that taking one of these courses offer. Technically called traffic violator schools by the California DMV, these driving safety courses are designed to educate motorists in safe driving practices. Even if your citation was simply the result of a momentary lapse in judgment, it is assumed that if you received a California traffic ticket, you could use a refresher course in the rules of the road.

Although most people dread the thought of taking traffic school in California, recent advances in technology have made it a lot easier to do so. While you were required to give up an entire day to attend a classroom course in the past, you can now take the entire program online. The ability to complete the course from the comforts of home makes the idea of signing up for a traffic violator school much more appealing. Even still, the reasons to take the course are still a little blurry for some. In an effort to clear up this confusion, some great reasons to attend a California traffic school course are:

Benefits of Traffic School in California

Keep Your California Driving Record Clean

The biggest draw of California traffic schools is how they can help keep your driving record clean. Whenever you receive a traffic ticket in California, there are points associated with your violation. These Violation Points can quickly add up and can cause things like the suspension or revocation of your driving privileges. Most citations carry 1 point, although some of the more serious citations carry 2. You will be deemed a Negligent Operator and risk the loss of your driving privileges if you accumulate:

  • 4 or more points in 12 months
  • 6 or more points in 24 months
  • 8 or more points in 36 months

In order to keep points off of your driving record after you receive a traffic ticket, you can take traffic school in California to mask your ticket. Completion of a DMV licensed traffic violator school will result in masking your ticket from you record and keeping the points off of it. This is a great benefit, especially since your California auto insurance company uses your driving record to help determine rates. Potential employers also use your driving record to determine whether or not you are hired. All around, a clean driving record is the way to go!

Prevent a California Auto Insurance Increase

The same points that can threaten your driving privileges or make you ineligible for a job can also cost you money. One of the factors in determining your California auto insurance rates is your driving record. If you have accumulated a lot of points, your insurer may see this as a sign of being an irresponsible driver with a heightened risk of being involved in a traffic accident. Even just one point added to your driving record can cause an auto insurance rate increase. This can cost hundreds of dollars over the three years that the point will remain on your record. By completing a traffic school course, your citation will be masked from your California auto insurance provider and your rates will not increase as a result of your citation. Even better still, many insurance companies offer additional discounts to drivers with clean driving records or to those who go extended periods of time without receiving a ticket. Completing traffic school in California can really help to save you money!
